3 years of Girls in Longboarding – How it all stared

Wow! Just noticed past week that I’ve started Girls in Longboarding exactly three years ago. There are so many ’wows’ that are overwhelming me right now a little.

Three years ago i just came back from my trip to the USA, where I noticed one more time that i was missing female and skating role models. I‘ve met two awesome girls, Micaela and Amanda Panda in L.A. and I was so blown away when I saw them skating. Back home I decided to meet more rad skating girls and capture their passion, since i was looking for more rad skating girls and I was pretty much in photography. It seemed like the perfect solution for what I felt at the moment and what I was missing in this point.

Back then I didn’t know how changing it would be for me and my upcoming years.

I just decided in a calm moment, today (exactly now, time and so) to start it via a Facebook page and I uploaded some pics I took the summer before. Totally unexpected (really, I thought, maybe the girls I would portray and me would be interested), the page hit the 1000 Like mark on Facebook, without any concrete conceptual photos within one week… in March I started the first photoshoot with Giulia and figured out the best way to portray girls within the sport and their passion for it. This is how I started. An own passion for this new baby was growing and growing and noticed with every girl how important it was for them and for other to be seen, the way I captured them. It was a really beautiful warm feeling to see the growing self confidence around! Just seeing others – if she can so can I!

Through Girls in Longboading, Hannah from my hometown came to me and we started GRRRLS* can skate – a group of girls with the goal to support women, lesbian, trans*, inter. In the past years we did a couple of workshops and the two big GRRRLS* Skate Fests in Bielefeld, Germany. After time I got more and more engaged with women in the Longboard and skate sport and my own role within, with society, and how it made me how I was. With more and more reflection with it and myself it felt more and more easy to support other girls that felt in the same place. In the end of my studies I was looking for a topic for my final of my master studies in graphic and communication designs and from one moment to another I knew I needed to do a magazine. It was a couple of semesters ago that I did a little magazine, so I barely knew what I was doing, but for some reason I felt super confident (a feeling I got through skating a lot, a feeling I want more girls to discover! <3 ), I knew it was a BIG project, difficult to realize, but confident to do it, and if I want to achieve something I work for it until its done – so I did! With two more girls, Rachel and Anna, from the US and Australia, we made a concept of our dream magazine, emphasizing more women* to skate through Skype! The story continues, its also already over two years ago, but that so far, how it all stared! <3 Pure love, I am working on three jobs to earn money to be able to keep S*pin running (mostly alone, and I am super thankful for Dinekes and Xenias help here and there) and looking back shows more me one more time how much changed for me and also so many girls*, it always touches my heart, when girls write me messages to tell me how much they love the work and it’s importance and impact!

I am on the right way, even it its at the moment more stony then ever, but we keep it rolling!
